New House in an Old Neighborhood in Dallas

Our national headquarters…. located 3,500 feet south of Dallas City Hall, 1,200 feet from the Cedars DART light rail station, and 300 feet north of Lee Harvey’s.

A house and studio for an artist in the rocky hills of Kessler Park.

Designed to fit the context of gracious 1920’s homes in the oldest suburb of Dallas. The floor plan of the house was designed to lay comfortably within the existing trees. The form of the house was established with respect to the overall tree canopy.

Twenty-nine micro units in the Bishop Arts District.

Charmless 1972 tract house reborn with verve.

A two story pavilion overlooking the Chattahoochee River at Columbus State University in Georgia. 

Located above Maroon Creek this project involves the restoration of a 1965 modernist home and the addition of new living and bedroom spaces. The new work is clad in fiber-cement board siding, in white and blue-gray colors.

The floor, walls, and roof are constructed with insulated panels used for walk-in freezers. This master suite addition faces due west to obtain the full range of the year’s sunsets. Perforated metal screens reduce the heat while allowing a view to the night sky.

An urban infill house in The Cedars neighborhood.

Not quite a duplex but not single family detached, two homes span up and over their driveways, meeting in the middle.  Part of an urban infill development in The Cedars.

Like a kid’s bugbox except it’s people who are on the inside.

A small house designed to work big.

Located in Urban Reserve overlooking the light rail tracks this small and efficient house floats above the ground on 60 foot long steel beams.

Also located in Urban Reserve this 2,000 square foot home is covered in a corrugated metal skin that recalls the famous 1920’s airplane built by Henry Ford.

Complete do over of back yard of a 1965 modernist house in Forest Hills. The new work includes a master suite, studio, and covered outdoor living spaces.

The black brick form contains a wood-burning oven. The copper plate oven door is attached to a counterweight centered above the porch floor.

The house is organized around a central court. The massing of the house allows three existing Live Oak trees to continue to dominate the site

New additions, attached and freestanding, are arranged to create a compound around original, modest farmhouse.

Built around the stone ruin of the original homestead.

A tree of iron amongst the junipers… A place to enjoy the Texas sunset.

A simple, unfussy house at the base of a rocky, tree covered hill.

The living spaces are on the second floor to allow a view over boathouses. The house survived direct hits by Hurricanes Ike and Rita.

Inspired by the Texas Hill Country this house is clad in Leuder’s “roughback” stone. The interior uses a variety of wood including re-claimed heart pine for siding and millwork.

A freestanding addition to a 1930’s international style house that forges a strong relationship to the original structure without mimicry of materials or cloyingness.

A base on the bay for sailing and other adventures.

A place to sit and relax by the water.  Located in Oak Cliff.  In collaboration with Rhotenberry Wellen Architects.

Workspace for the editing and presentation of television commercials.

Designed as part of the Columbia Arts Center as a place for visiting artists to work with neighborhood children to make and display art.

On the campus of East Dallas Community School, this 2,400 square foot buidling provides flexible ground level space and a caretaker’s apartment above.

A 1950’s church was converted into a 13,000 square foot public school.  Natural light is introduced into every classroom and work space.

A 1918 firehouse adapted for re-use as office and exhibition space for the Columbia Arts Center.

Located in Valley View Park at the trailhead of the White Rock Hike and Bike Trail this project for the City of Dallas is constructed of concrete, galvanized steel and corrugated cor-ten. The pavilion utilizes photovoltaic panels for night lighting. The form and scale of the pavilion recalls traditional shelters and meeting places.

The new science wing at Oak Hill Academy provides outdoor learning spaces for students to observe and interact with the natural world.
